General Information

EIC codes (Energy Identification Coding scheme) are used to identify entities, objects and areas in electronic data interchange in the cross-border market processes. The uniform Energy Identification Coding scheme (EIC) has been established by the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E).

The codes are being issued by Central Issuing Office (operated by ENTSO-E) and Local Issuing Offices. There are two Local Issuing Offices in Poland: one operated by Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne S.A. (identification number 19) for electricity market and the other operated by GAZ‑SYSTEM S.A. (identification number 53) for gas sector. All electricity market participants who wish to participate in the cross-border market must apply for the EIC code.

EIC codes consist of 16 characters. The first 2 characters identify the issuing office (identification number). The third character describes the type of a code e.g. a party (X), an area (Y), a resource object (W) etc. The following 12 characters create an unique non-significant (random or non-random) part of the identification code. The final symbol is a checksum character generated by dedicated algorithm (see also the EIC Check Digit Calculator tool).

Responsibilities of the Polish EIC Issuing Office

The Polish EIC Issuing Office operated by PSE S.A. is responsible for:

• informing market participants on the EIC project,
• verification of EIC applications according to the current EIC Reference Manual,
• registration and management of the issued EIC codes in local and central database,
• ensuring the uniqueness of the issued EIC codes,
• publication of the EIC codes issued by the Polish EIC Issuing Office.
