Causes of the disruption at Rogowiec substation are subject to investigation. The system is stable
The outage of the Belchatow power plant units, which occurred on May 17, 2021, has not caused any power shortages thus has gone unnoticed by customers. The outage was caused by disruption at the Rogowiec substation, to which 11 generating units of the Belchatow power plant, owned by PGE GiEK, are connected. The incident occurred at 4:34 p.m. CET. The prompt response of PSE staff allowed to restore Rogowiec substation operational capacity within an hour – the first three lines connecting generating units were switched on at 6:42 p.m. CET.

Underlying causes of the incident are the subject of ongoing investigation. The first results point out a human error as being at the origin of the incident. PSE has appointed an investigation team to explain such wide consequences of the incident. First and foremost the actions of protection systems have to be analyzed, both on TSO and  power plant’s sides.

According to the current knowledge, the disruption was not a result of any targeted third party activity nor a cyber-attack. Polish Power System is in stable operation now not being affected by the incident.
