Outage of Belchatow power plant generation units. Power system is stable
On Monday, May 17, 2021, shortly after 4:30 p.m. CET, a disruption occurred at PSE’s Rogowiec substation. As a result of system protection actions, 10 generation units of the Belchatow power plant, owned by PGE GiEK, were automatically switched off leading to a loss of 3640 MW of generation.

PSE immediately balanced the system among others by starting up generators at pumped storage power stations, activating spinning reserves at  other power stations, and emergency support  from TSOs of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Germany. Polish Power System is in a stable operation now.

PGE GiEK and PSE’s experts cooperated in order to restore the operation of Belchatow generating units and reconnect them to the power system. The most likely cause of the disruption was a short circuit. Underlying causes of the incident are the subject of ongoing investigation. Further information will be published on PSE’s website.
