Higher capacity in power exchange agreed between Poland and Germany
Transmission System Operators 50Hertz and PSE Operator S.A. agree on action plan / Increase in line capacity between Krajnik and Vierraden through conversion from 220 to 380 kilovolts on its way and installation of Phase Shifter Transformers in substations Krajnik and Mikułowa/ Important stimulus for further development of a single European electricity market.

Berlin/Warsaw – The development of the single European electricity market continues to gain speed. A Memorandum of Understanding now has been signed in Berlin on the occasion of the meeting of the Boards of Management of the German Transmission System Operator, 50Hertz, and its Polish counterpart, PSE Operator S.A. It provides for an upgrade of the cross-border interconnector between Vierraden (Germany) and Krajnik (Poland) from currently 220 to 380 kV and installation of Phase Shifter Transformers in substations Krajnik and Mikułowa in several steps until 2013/2014. Both partners will be responsible for planning, obtaining permits, financing and construction activities in their respective balancing zones, however, they will closely coordinate all actions and individual steps to be taken in the spirit of the joint project.

This German-Polish project sets a clear sign for the further development of the single European electricity market, emphasize Wolfgang Neldner, Technical Managing Director of 50Hertz, and Jerzy Andruszkiewicz, Board Member of PSE Operator S.A. “The planned upgrade of the interconnector also serves the European goal of integrating more renewable energy nto the grid and at the same time of increasing the security of supply in Central Europe“, jointly continue Neldner and Andruszkiewicz.

With the action plan to boost lines between Germany and Poland the two neighbouring Transmission System Operators transpose a decision taken by the European Union within the guidelines for the Trans-European networks that define increase of transmission capacity over interconnections between Germany and Poland, the two Member States, as a top priority project in Europe.
