PSE’s new integrated report: Caring about the Security of Future Generations
The published integrated annual report provides an overview of the company, but first of all it shows the company’s significant impact on its environment. As a transmission system operator, PSE is responsible for the security of electricity supply to all regions of Poland, contributing to the economic and social development of our country. The report transparently presents the company’s new strategy and its strategic initiatives designed to ensure energy security for both the present and future generations.

PSE and Poland’s energy security

The 2016 integrated report is PSE’s third consecutive social report, but the first one in the company’s history to combine a sustainable development report with financial data. It includes a comprehensive overview of the power system structure in Poland, PSE’s role in maintaining the security of long-term electricity supply, implementation of the capacity market, and critical infrastructure management. The document describes plans for the development of the transmission system, a new investment project implementation model, and regulatory risk management measures. In the interests of secure and continuous energy supply to every region of the country, PSE has been upgrading and constructing new extra-high voltage lines for the evacuation of power from power plants, wind farms and other major generating sources. All this translates into PSE’s key importance to the economy and energy security of Poland.

As shown in the report, in 2016 PSE incurred capital expenditure of PLN 1.2 bn, investing in the development of network infrastructure. Until 2021, it plans to earmark PLN 10.1 bn for investment projects. Through those investments, the company continuously improves the operational reliability and security of the system. Its performance is testified by DYSU, the line and network equipment availability factor, which was as high as 99.74 percent in the reporting period.

Energy security is at the core of the correct functioning of states and international systems. Our company is responsible for the operational security of the power system and reliable operation of the electricity market. An analysis of external factors that determine PSE's operations confirms our belief in the viability of the reform of the existing market that we have embarked on in a joint effort with the Polish generators, the Energy Regulatory Office and the Ministry of Energy, as well as the improvement of the processes related, among other things, to the operational model of the IT networks and systems. This is linked to supporting the long-term security of electricity supply which must be combined with meeting environmental and social requirements. In our view, an opportunity to eliminate the issue of power shortage in the Polish power system in the mid and long term will stem from the implementation of the capacity market. This will significantly contribute to the improvement of system operation security, and hence support PSE in the fulfilment of its duties as transmission system operator, including the current balancing of electricity generation and demand – stressed Eryk Kłossowski, President of PSE’s Management Board.

PSE draws on international standards

An added value of the report, and its distinctive feature, is the PSE value creation model based on three areas: Market, Infrastructure & Investment and People & Relations. An effort was also made to select appropriate key performance indicators (KPIs) for each area. In the area of non-financial reporting, the guidelines of the International Integrated Reporting Council and the Global Reporting Initiative Standards (GRI Standards) were followed.

The process of selecting issues proceeded in three stages:

  1. The starting point was to define topics which are material in terms of sustainable development of PSE, preceded by an analysis of the company's responsibility to the market, society and the environment, and responsibility at the workplace. The analysis also identified the organisation’s stakeholder groups.
  2. A dialogue session was then held with representatives of key stakeholder groups where priority issues were identified which, in the stakeholders’ opinion, should be discussed in the integrated annual report
  3. As the final stage of the process, an internal validation workshop was held, during which the executive and management staff indicated key issues from the company's point of view, and referred to the results of the dialogue session.

The report was published in an interactive format. The website was designed based on the latest technology. With its advanced interface, infographics and smartphone, tablets and desktop browsing options, it is user-friendly to a wide audience. To highlight key elements, infographics are used, and key data are illustrated with animated diagrams. The extensive and insightful content is enhanced by the company’s own photos lending an individual character to PSE’s report. The whole is delivered in a modern as well as consistent and factual style.
